The world of Takashi Murakami: Manga and Superflat
For Takashi Murakami, Manga and Superflat are an important source of inspiration. The images of mass culture together with the bright and vivid colors used by the artist in different works, are typical and recurring elements that characterize his artistic production.
The main works of the artist are made with flattened shapes, typical of Japanese graphic art, which reflect the style of the postmodern art movement founded by the artist himself, namely Superflat. The term Superflat, refers not only to the flattened forms typical of graphic art and animation, but it also indicates the "superficial emptiness" of Japanese consumer culture.
The artist Takashi Murakami is not only famous for creating works of high art, which means the art destined exclusively for museums and collectors, but he is also known for producing objects for mass consumption typical of low art. Thanks to this two-dimensionality of his works, Takashi Murakami manages to break down the boundary between popular art and elite art.
