Banksy - Pulp Fiction - Screenprint - 2004

The 2004 limited edition screenprint by Banksy Pulp Fiction depicts the actors Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta in an unforgettable scene from Quentin Tarantino’s film Pulp Fiction (1994), though holding bananas instead of their guns.

In the work by Banksy Pulp Fiction, art and irony are one. The scene redraws one of the most iconic images of contemporary culture, with the original scene of violence turning suddenly into something hilarious, provocative.

Pulp Fiction is unsigned and numbered. It belongs to a limited edition of 750 pieces (600 unsigned + 150 signed) and measures 19.7x27.6 in. The work is provided with a Pest Control authenticity certificate.

Banksy Pulp Fiction: meaning of the artwork

The meaning of Pulp Fiction lies in the unmistakable irony of Banksy’s art. The work is an invitation to lay down arms: it makes us smile, facing at the same time a topical issue such as the criticism of violence and weapon usage.

In addition Banky, artist who often plays with references to other artists, not only quotes the famous film by Tarantino, but also the artist Andy Warhol. Those bananas remind us of the The Velvet Underground’s debut record cover, designed by Warhol in 1967.

Banksy Pulp Fiction: Old Street graffiti vs print edition

The subject of this artwork first appeared as a piece of graffiti art, as it often happens for Banksy. Pulp Fiction - Old Street version was released in 2002 on a wall in London's Old Street district: only two years later the artist made a screenprint edition of the same subject.

The exact Banksy Pulp Fiction location was on a wall near the Old Street tube station, but the graffiti work was removed in 2007 by Transport for London, the local government body responsible for most of the London transport network.
