Takashi Murakami - Jellyfish Eyes Cream
Takashi Murakami's work “Jellyfish Eyes Cream”, created in 2001, is an offset silkscreen print produced in a limited edition of 300 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist. Measuring 50×50 cm, this work is a representative example of Murakami's distinctive approach, which combines elements of Japanese pop culture with an abstract, hypnotic aesthetic.
The composition is dominated by a multitude of large stylized eyes floating against a cream-colored background. The eyes, characterized by vivid green irises, red outlines, and white highlights that create a three-dimensional effect, vary in size, giving the sensation of fluid, almost organic movement. The irregularity of the arrangement and the hint of biomorphic shapes evoke a surreal world, as if the very surface of the work were alive. The title “Jellyfish Eyes Cream” invokes the idea of immersion in an alien and visually seductive environment, inspired by the nature of jellyfish and their ethereal lightness.
The delicate color palette, combining neutral tones with vivid accents, creates a balance between serenity and dynamism. This contrast is amplified by the offset screen-printing technique, which imparts absolute precision to the details and a smooth, even finish, making the work eye-catching both from a distance and up close.
“Jellyfish Eyes Cream” reflects Murakami's fascination with abstraction and surrealism, while maintaining a connection to recurring themes in his work, such as perception, repetition and the interplay between the natural and the artificial. It is a work that invites the viewer to explore the boundary between the familiar and the unfamiliar, transforming observation into an immersive and contemplative experience.
