Takashi Murakami, 4 Arhats, One With Four Eyes: Signed Screen Print
4 Arhats, One With Four Eyes is a screen print on paper, edition 18/300, made by the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, signed at the bottom right in silver.
This psychedelic artwork comes across with all its surreal peculiarities: a large quantity of arhats (from the Sanskrit language "being who has reached enlightenment", or monk in service of Buddha), of different sizes, expressions and clothing, in prayer or meditation, accompanied by mythological creatures, sacred trees and monstrous demons.
Takashi Murakami's Superflat style is a mix of currents: Pop influence is evident and how it is applied to forms and meanings typical of Japanese culture, through the Manga style and the Anime style; the expression is taken to the highest levels.
This screen print takes up the cycle of artworks created in 2014, The 500 Arhats, inspired by the 100 rolls of Kazunobu; Takashi Murakami creates a similar artwork, also in meaning.
So the artist represents 100 arhats and dedicates this artwork to the Japanese people hit by the Fukushima tsunami in 2011, as Kazunobu di d in the mid-nineteenth century after the sea devastated his land.
The reflective surface of his screen prints accentuates the mocking and repugnant nature of the horror of the natural catastrophe, but not only: pessimism is strongly emphasized through an art that is sacred, but at the same time irreverent.
