Andy Warhol - Campbell’s Soup - This is not by me - 1985

The limited edition screenprint by Andy Warhol Campbell's Soup - This is not by me depicts one of the artist’s best-known icons: the Campbell’s Soup can.

With the Campbell's Soup cans Andy Warhol represents an everyday commodity, easily recognizable by the American public, transforming it into a piece of art history.

Andy Warhol Campbell Soup cans are an example of how the artist borrowed subjects and practices from pop culture, in order to make art closer to a wide public. For this reason, in addition to Campbell’s Soup Warhol also portrayed stars from the music and film industry such as Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe.

Campbell's Soup - This is not by me is hand-signed on the back by Andy Warhol with the words "this is not by me, Andy Warhol". Made in 1985, it measures 35x23 in.

Campell’s Soup - This is not by me

After the paintings Warhol created other screenprint editions of the Campbell’s Soup cans.

The Belgian printing house Sunday B Morning, contacted by Warhol for supporting him with the printing process, decided to launch a reprint, but at first Warhol refused to collaborate.

Despite his refusal, Sunday B Morning didn’t give up and started the production, putting a stamp on the back of the prints quoting: "Published by Sunday B. Morning" and "Fill in your own signature".

Faced with this initiative, Warhol decided to sign some of these works on the back with the words "This is not by me, Andy Warhol": an ironic reference to the authorship and authenticity of the work.

The artworks of the This Is not by Me series are in limited edition of unknown size - thus not numbered - and hand-signed by Warhol.
