Banksy - Silver Flag - Screenprint - 2006
The 2006 limited edition screenprint by Banksy Silver Flag represents a group of children standing on top of an old demised car, raising the American flag.
The composition is pyramidal, featuring the car as its base and culminating in the flag of the United States. Black and silver are the only colours of Sliver Flag; in the background a big, central sun enhances a sense of melancholy instead of warmth.
The street artist was inspired by Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima a famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Six American soldiers were raising a victory flag over the battlefield and now Banksy overturns the image, representing children raising a silver flag.
Flag thus becomes a caricature of Rosenthal's shot: the atmosphere is no longer victorious, but gloomy. Banksy seems to tell of a marginalized youth in the suburbs, lost and without guidance.
The real meaning of this work lies in the criticism of war. It is neither heroic nor glorious, but a massacre. Banksy thus reveals the misery behind an armed conflict and harshly criticises the media and the government for depicting war under a deceptively positive and necessary light.
Silver Flag is unsigned and numbered. It belongs to a limited edition of 1.000 pieces and measures 22.5x30.1 in. The work is provided with a Pest Control authenticity certificate.

Probably the most famous street artist still in activity, Banksy is known for his stencil style graffiti that criticize political authority, war, consumerism and the status of art.
His style features a subtle irony: Banksy makes us smile, facing at the same time critical issues of global society. Images like the Balloon Girl or Pulp Fiction have become icons of Street Art itself, and his installations like The Walled Off Hotel and Dismaland have introduced a new way of understanding art.
Banksy also made the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, earning an Oscar nomination. It tells the story of the street artist Mr. Brainwash.
Banksy’s urban interventions and studio works have been exhibited worldwide, and the market interest in his artworks experienced a huge growth in the last decade.
